While Hosch has lived in Wisconsin her whole life, she has not pursued art as a career the whole of her life. Trained in computers, Hosch worked as a software engineer during her early career years. Not until later was she able to devote her creative energies to her real passion -- and talent -- her art.

Ms. Hosch lived in Green Bay until moving to the Milwaukee area in 1988. She has four children -- three daughters and one son, two stepchildren -- a son and a daughter, and eleven grandchildren total. She and her husband also own a Shih Tzu named Winston.

Kathy's professional training is in Computer Science, an area in which she spend 35 years. She was always interested in the arts, particulary painting, but was unable to pursue her interest until moving to Waukesha County in Southeastern Wisconsin. Though she does not have a formal art degree, she has participated in numerous workshops and seminars throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest. This training has certainly helped her technique: the core of her tremendous vision, however, is innate.

Kathy's paintings are oil on canvas. "I like using oil paint," she says, "because it gives a richness and depth to the finished painting." Adding to this richness is a method she uses to create a gentle radiance:

I often prime the canvas with a lightly colored acrylic before beginning the painting, a technique I learned from a dear friend, Robert Warren. This gives an additional glow to the finished painting.

The subject matter of Kathy's paintings includes florals, nature scenes and meadows, formal gardens, seascapes, and lighthouses. The plurality of her works are florals. "The inspiration for my floral work springs from my delight in the bright, vivid colors found in my daughter's gardens," she states.

Scenes from around the United States, Europe, and South America have inspired Hosch's landscapes and seascapes. Seascapes have become an increasing focus of her work as of late: "I have always been interested in the lighthouses around the Great Lakes, and it is this interest which leads me to painting these wonderful beacons."

Kathy Hosch is as an example of how natural talent can remain largely dormant until given the freedom to flourish. She illustrates the fact that people are so much more than we see at first sight -- such as the computer programmer with innate artistic ability and a capacity to see and depict things in a way others cannot.

She is also an example that vitality is a personal attribute rather than something tied to career alone, and that youth and spirit are often most present in those with experience and wisdom. In all this, through this, and through her art, Kathy herself -- like her lighthouses -- is a beacon for us all.
